The European Commission will host a high-level public conference on 'Land as a resource' in Brussels on 19 June 2014, with the objective of highlighting the importance of good land management to address European and global challenges, particularly in view of an increasing world population. It will also tackle the shortcomings of the current European land use model, including conflicting policy drivers.
The conference will be opened by Janez Potočnik, Environment Commissioner, with a key-note speech by Lester E. Brown, Director of the Earth Policy Institute (Washington, D.C.).
Registration is limited to a maximum of 400 people. The conference will be web-streamed live and links to the service will be posted on the conference website when available.
The IES is supporting the preparation of a Communication on land as a resource and its impact assessment, foreseen in the 7th Environment Action Programme. The research work focuses on the provision of science-based evidence of past, current and future threats to land resources and related ecosystem services. The IES further supports the definition of actions at EU level to foster a more efficient use of land in a policy-coherent and sustainable framework. The Conference on Land as a Resource will provide high-level inputs to the preparatory work for the Communication. Specific side-events with experts from Member States will provide the opportunity to exchange views on scientific approaches and verify the consistency of assumptions with National initiatives.
