Directorate-General Environment (ENV)

This Directorate-General proposes new environmental laws and monitors the implementation of the new measures by the member states. The main goal is to protect the environment for future generations and to encourage sustainable development.

The DG has several tasks:

  • maintain and enhance the quality of life by protecting and preserving natural resources
  • to promote measures regarding production, consumption and waste management in order to make efficient use of resources
  • to integrate environmental aspects into other policy areas of the EU
  • to keep in mind societal and environmental needs of the current population and future generations regarding economic growth
  • to control climate change and the conservation of biodiversity
