Debate: Dutch military efforts in the Middle East

On March 4th, 2020 a debate was held about Dutch military efforts in the Middle East. The influence of the Dutch Parliament on decision-making processes surrounding military missions was discussed.

Martijn Kitzen1, Senior Lecturer on the Dutch Defense Academy, introduced the topic. Carolien Roelants2 (journalist and Middle-East expert) and André Bosman3 (VVD-politician) participated in the debate. Moderator was Stéphane Alonso4.

    Martijn Kitzen is universitair hoofddocent aan de Nederlandse Militaire Academie. Kitzen is gespecialiseerd in irreguliere oorlogsvoering zoals guerillatactieken en counterinsurgency operaties. Tevens adviseert hij militaire organisaties en individuele commandanten.
     
  • 2. 
    Journalist Carolien Roelants (1948) volgde van 1981 tot 2013 de ontwikkelingen in het Midden-Oosten als redacteur van NRC Handelsblad. Na haar pensioen zette zij haar wekelijkse column ‘Dwars’ voort, waarvoor zij in 2018 de Leon-Weckeprijs ontving. Dit is een prijs die is ingesteld voor een dwarse of kritische bijdrage aan het publieke debat over oorlog en vrede.

    André Bosman (1965) was kandidaat voor de VVD bij de Eerste Kamerverkiezingen 2023. Hij was in de periode 2010-2021 Tweede Kamerlid. Bosman is voormalig vluchtcommandant, squadronvlieger en vlieginstructeur bij de Koninklijke Luchtmacht. Was eerder voor de VVD bestuurlijk actief in Zeeland en werkte onder meer als liason officier op het hoofdkwartier van ISAF in Kaboel. Defensiewoordvoerder van de VVD-fractie en later woordvoerder Europese zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties.

    Stéphane Alonso (1973) is chef van de buitenlandredactie voor NRC Handelsblad. Eerder was hij als journalist belast met buitenlandse en Europese zaken en correspondent met standplaatsen Brussel en Warschau. Alonso is co-auteur van twee boeken, over de transformatie van Polen na de val van het communisme en over de Europese vluchtelingencrisis.

    The Filmhuis Den Haag (movie theater The Hague) is an independent arthouse showing primarily films that are not shown in regular cinemas. The Filmhuis Den Haag also organises lectures, debate evenings, workshops and educational screenings.

    International press centre Nieuwspoort (English: news gate) is a meeting point for politicians, journalists, lobbyists and press officers. Press conferences by politicians and ministers often take place at Nieuwspoort.

    ProDemos is the 'House for Democracy and the Rule of Law'. ProDemos explains the Dutch govermental system and the rule of law to students, tourists, members of political organisations and other guests. The ProDemos Visitor Centre is located directly opposite the Houses of Parliament (Binnenhof) in The Hague. From here ProDemos provides guided tours, educational programmes, debates, exhibitions, and courses.
