The hidden costs of our food choices, Amsterdam - Main contents
For their first guest lecture of the year, the Green Office is welcoming Mr. Ed Winters (Earthling Ed) for a talk about the hidden costs of our food choices and veganism as a more sustainable alternative. Besides veganism as a way to fight climate change, Ed will also elaborate on the ethical side of veganism in his talk, which will be followed by a discussion any of you can join!
The topic:
We see it in the news, we hear it on the radio, we come across it on social media: Our food choices have a high impact on the planet and cause immense suffering to billions of living beings; we cannot keep hiding from the truth anymore! But knowing is one thing and acting is another thing.
Simply showing slaughterhouse footage on Facebook or Instagram won’t make people go vegan overnight. Policies aimed are curbing carbon emissions coming from livestock are not the entire solution either. The food-tech space is making great alternatives to animal products, but education is key to actually make us understand what it takes to make the foods we eat and why we need a drastic shift in our diets.
Sounds all quite convoluted to you? Do not worry. Guest speaker Mr. Ed Winters will tackle the complexities of this topic and make his audience aware of the fact that we cannot solely be consumers anymore. We have to become food citizens, aware of the origin of our foods and willing to try new, delicious foods for the better of the world. We can all contribute in one way or another to the animal rights and food innovation movement and hopefully, Winters’ story and life path will inspire every individual in the audience to find his/her own place within this movement.
