Spanish city to slash electricity use

An ERDF-funded project aims to halve electricity consumption in the south-eastern Spanish town of Garrucha by modernising its public lighting system, cutting costs and helping to promote energy efficiency.

The project intends to achieve the 50% power reduction by installing LED street lighting throughout the Andalusian seaport that is popular with tourists, while modernising and adding to its current lighting infrastructure.

Officials say the effort will be beneficial both for the town’s budget and the environment by reducing its energy bill and boosting its energy efficiency.

The local administration now has six months to carry out proceedings linked to procuring the necessary services and supplies.

At just over EUR 488 000, ERDF funding will cover 80% of the project costs. The project is expected to be completed within 30 months.
