The Maastricht Debate 2019: Spitzenkandidaten in Europa

DEN HAAG (PDC) - De Universiteit Maastricht, één van de partners van het Montesquieu Instituut, organiseert op 29 april aanstaande een Europees verkiezingsdebat. Dat doet de universiteit in samenwerking met Politico, de gemeente Maastricht en de provincie Limburg.

Aan dit debat zullen vijf vooraanstaande Europese politici deelnemen, te weten Frans Timmermans1, Violeta Tomic, Guy Verhofstadt2, Jan Zahradil3 en Bas Eickhout4. Zij zijn allen Spitzenkandidat of vooraanstaand lid van hun Europese fractie. Zij zijn uitgenodigd voor het debat omdat zij allen een andere Europese stroming vertegenwoordigen en kans maken op het voorzitterschap van de Europese Commissie.

De kandidaten kruisen de degens over drie onderwerpen: digitalisering, duurzaamheid en de toekomst van Europese samenwerking. Het debat zal worden georganiseerd in Theater aan het Vrijthof te Maastricht. De leiding van het debat is in handen van Rianne Letschert (Universiteit Maastricht) en Ryan Heath (Journalist voor Politico).

Het debat zal live uitgezonden worden en is digitaal te volgen via het Youtubekanaal van Politico (stream via deze link).

    Frans Timmermans is Minister of Foreign Affairs since November 5th 2012. Between 2007 and 2010 Timmermans was junior minister of Foreign Affairs, charged with European Cooperation. In 1998 Timmermans became member of the House of Representatives, serving terms until 2007 and again in between 2010 and 2012. Prior to his political career Frans Timmermans served with dr. M. van der Stoel, High Commissioner of national minorities at OSCE and was member of the cabinet of Commissioner Van den Broek at the EC. He also worked at various posts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

    Guy Verhofstadt (1953) is a member of the European Parliament since 2 July 2009 and chairman of the liberal group in the European Parliament. Verhofstadt was first vice-minister and minister of budget in Belgium before leading three cabinets from 1999 till 2008. His first two cabinets were composed of liberals, social democrats and greens, and no christian parties, a rarity in Belgian politics at the time.

    Jan Zahradil is a member of the European Parliament since 23 April 2003 for "Občanská demokratická strana", which is aligned with the European Conservatives and Reformists. Zahradil is elected on behalf of the Czech Republic.

    Bas Eickhout (1976) is a member of the European Parliament since 2009 on behalf of GroenLinks, the Dutch green and leftwing liberal party. He was frontrunner at the 2014 elections for the European Parliament for his party. Prior to his election Eickhout was a senior researcher at the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency. As MEP he focuses on climate, energy and environmental policy, and to a lesser extent the eurocrisis.
