The Gender Equality Index is EIGE’s unique tool first published in 2013 and updated every second year until 2017. It provides both a composite indicator of gender equality attainment at EU level and more detailed analysis of the situation of each Member State in the respective composite domains.

As of 2019 the core Gender Equality Index will be updated annually with a deeper focus on selected domains per year. The 4th edition of the Gender Equality Index will focus on domains of time, work and knowledge with the aim to contribute to the monitoring of the implementation of the European Commission’s New Start initiative on work-life balance. Work-life balance indicators will be analysed in relation to overall progress in gender equality as measured by the Gender Equality Index.

EIGE is inviting experts to share knowledge and provide an invaluable input in the development of the 4th edition of the Gender Equality Index, which will be released in October, 2019.

  • Participation is by invitation only.
  • Presentations will be made available at a later stage.

European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE)

The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) is a European agency supporting the work of EU governments and EU institutions (especially the Commission) in this field. Not only is gender equality a fundamental right – progress in this area is also vital for the EU to meet its goals of economic growth and social cohesion. Although inequalities still exist, the EU has made significant progress in recent decades. This is mainly thanks to legislation and the inclusion of gender equality in all fields of public policy, as well as specific measures to advance women

Tasks of EIGE

  • collecting and analysing comparable data on gender issues
  • developing methodological tools, especially to help integrate gender equality in all policy areas
  • facilitating the sharing of best practice and dialogue among stakeholders
  • raising public awareness.
