Mission: The Platform is a forum to exchange information, scientific knowledge, and best practices related to animal welfare between Member States and all relevant stakeholders. This forum will promote animal welfare standards internationally and improve the enforcement of existing legislation on animal welfare.

Selection procedure: The Platform comprise following members in relation to animal welfare: business and professional organisations, organisations from civil society, independent experts from academic and research institutes, EU and European Economic Area Member States, the European Food Safety Authorities and relevant international intergovernmental organisations like the World Organisation for Animal Health. Only members of business and professional organisations, organisations from civil society as well from academic and research institutes are currently being selected via a call for applications. The application was be sent by 06 March 2017 at the latest. The selection is completed and the members were nominated. The members are published in the Register of Commission Expert Groups and on the webpage of DG SANTE.

Selection procedure: Since June 2017, the Platform on Animal Welfare brings together public entities (EU/EEA countries, EU bodies and international organisations) and private stakeholders of the animal welfare sector (business and professional organisations, organisations from civil society, independent experts from academic and research institutes). On 7 May 2021, the Commission adopted a Decision renewing, until 30 June 2025, the mandate of the Platform on Animal Welfare. This renewal implies a new a call for applications to select the private stakeholders of the Platform. The deadline for application is set on 21 June 2021 at the latest. The Commission will publish the list of members in the Register of Commission Expert Groups and on the webpage of DG SANTE.

Rules of procedure: The expert groups and subgroups operate with standard rules of procedure of expert groups. The rules of procedure were adopted by simple majority of its members during the first Platform meeting on 6 June 2017.
