Mission: To provide advice and assistance to the Commission in the preparation of legislative proposals and policy initiatives, the preparation of delegated acts and the implementation of Union legislation, programmes and policies in relation to the protection and the restoration of World’s forests, including illegal logging, as well as coordination and cooperation with Member States and stakeholders in that regard. To ensure cooperation between Member States Competent Authorities and stakeholders and with the Commission in order to ensure compliance with the EU Timber Regulation and to assist the Commission in ensuring a uniform implementation of the EUTR and the FLEGT Regulation across the EU.

Task: other (Foster exchange on best practices across stakeholders/operators and EU Member States to increase ownership and awareness raising (exchanging views, building alliances, identifying problems in implementation and possible actions to address them; making available to public and private organisations, the existing practical tools and approaches, guidelines and criteria; offering the opportunity to frontrunners to share their experience, including on key issues such as transparency and traceability; contributing to the development of guidance for the implementation of the EU regulations) + Track progress, risks and opportunities for EUTR and FLEGT Regulation implementation, regularly taking stock of progress and reflecting on possible adjustments or additional measures to strengthen implementation + Discuss the best ways to implement the various actions included in the EU Communication on Stepping up EU Action to Protect and Restore the World’s Forests)

Selection procedure: The group includes up to 100 members of the following types: Type D members: Member States’ authorities and Type C members: organisations representing industry, farmers, forest/land owners, trade, civil society and research institutes, based on the EU or in third countries, which have been selected through a call for applications. Members shall nominate representatives and shall be responsible for ensuring that the latter provide a high level of expertise.

Selection procedure: The purpose of the new call is to appoint additional members.

Rules of procedure: Rules of Procedure of the initial EUTR/FLEGT Expert Group were adopted at the 1st meeting of that group on 18 February 2015. New rules of Procedure were drafted when the initial group was expanded to become the "Commission Expert Group/Multi-Stakeholder Platform on Protecting and Restoring the World’s Forests, including the EU Timber Regulation and the FLEGT Regulation". These new Rules of Procedure were adopted at the first meeting of the group on 1-2 October 2020 by the members focusing on Deforestation and Forest Degradation and at the second meeting of the group on 9-10 December 2020 by the members focusing on the implementation of the EU Timber Regulation and the FLEGT Regulation.
