13.1 Latest economic developments

The Commission³ is composed of the College of Commissioners of 28 members, including the President⁴ and vice-presidents. The Commissioners⁵, one from each EU country, provide the Commission's political leadership during their 5-year term. Each Commissioner is assigned responsibility for specific policy areas by the President.

The Commission operates according to the principle of collective responsibility. Decisions are taken collectively by the College of Commissioners, who are collectively responsible before the European Parliament.

  The Berlaymont building is the office of the European Commission.
   
• 2. 

  The Commission is composed of the College of Commissioners of 28 members, including the President and vice-presidents. The Commissioners, one from each EU country, provide the Commission's political leadership during their 5-year term. Each Commissioner is assigned responsibility for specific policy areas by the President.
   
• 3. 

  The European Commission is the executive body of the EU and runs its day-to-day business. It is made up of the College of Commissioners, 27 European Commissioners, one for each member state, who are each responsible for one or several policy areas. In addition, the 'Commission' also refers to the entire administrative body that supports the Commissioners, consisting of the Directorates-General and the Services.

  Deze functie wordt sinds 1 december 2019 vervuld door de Duitse Ursula von der Leyen. Zij is de opvolger van de Luxemburger Jean-Claude Juncker.

  Een Eurocommissaris is één van de 27 leden van de Europese Commissie en heeft als taak het behartigen van het algemeen belang van de Europese Unie. Iedere commissaris heeft een eigen portefeuille. Een aantal Eurocommissarissen zijn tevens vicevoorzitter van de Commissie.
