Directorate-General Justice and Consumers (JUST)

This Directorate-General develops and monitors the implementation of policies that aim to ensure that the whole of the European Union is an area of freedom and security without internal borders.

The main areas of activity of the DG are:

  • to ensure fundamental rights are upheld
  • matters regarding civil law
  • to garantuee personal data is protected
  • to garantuee access to the judiciary across the EU
  • consumer protection

On January 1st 2015 this DG was also made responsible for the policy concerning consumer protection. Up until July 1st 2010 the tasks of this DG were part of DG Justice, Freedom and Security i.
