    The European Parliament is the EU's law-making body. It is directly elected by EU voters every 5 years.
    What does the Parliament do?
    The Parliament has 3 main roles:

    This committee will conduct an inquiry into alleged breaches of EU law in the use of the surveillance software by, among others, Hungary and Poland. The committee is going to look into existing national laws regulating surveillance, and whether Pegasus spyware was used for political purposes against, for example, journalists, politicians and lawyers.
     
  • 3. 
    This committee will conduct an inquiry into alleged violations in the application of Union law governing live animal transports.
     
  • 4. 
    This parliamentary committee started on June 8 2016 and investigated for a period of twelve months money laundering, tax avoidance and tax evasion. Its establishment was a direct result of the revelations from the so-called 'Panama Papers' in April 2016. It looked in particular at whether the Commission and Member States did sufficient to counter money laundering, tax avoidance and tax evasion.
     
  • 5. 
    This "Special Committee on Financial Crimes, Tax Evansion and Tax Avoidance" was set up by the European Parliament in March 2018. It continues the work of previous special committees TAXE, TAX2 and PANA.

    This committee investigated in detail alleged contraventions and maladministration in relation to emission measurements in the automotive sector. During its twelve-month mandate this Committee made use of various methods to investigate the alleged failures: hearings with experts, invite witnesses, requests of documents and fact-finding missions.
