COUNCIL DECISION (EU) 2024/1394

of 22 April 2024

on the conclusion, on behalf of the European Union, of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and its Member States, of the one part, and Japan, of the other part

THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION,

Having regard to the Treaty on European Union, and in particular Article 37 thereof,

Having regard to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, and in particular Article 212(1), in conjunction with point (a) of Article 218(6) and the second subparagraph of Article 218(8) thereof,

Having regard to the proposal from the European Commission and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy,

Having regard to the consent of the European Parliament (1),

Whereas:

In accordance with Council Decision 2018/1197 of 26 June 2018 (2), the Strategic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and its Member States, of the one part, and Japan, of the other part (‘the Agreement’) was signed on 17 June 2018, subject to its conclusion at a later date.

 

(2)

The objective of the Agreement is to strengthen cooperation and dialogue across a broad range of bilateral, regional and multilateral issues.

 

(3)

The Agreement should be approved,

HAS ADOPTED THIS DECISION:

Article 1

The Strategic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and its Member States, of the one part, and Japan, of the other part, is hereby approved on behalf of the Union. (3).

Article 2

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy shall co-chair the Joint Committee provided for in Article 42 of the Agreement.

Article 3

The President of the Council shall designate the person(s) empowered to exchange the instrument confirming the completion of approval and ratification by the Union Party provided for in Article 47(1) of the Agreement, in order to express the consent to be bound by the Agreement. (4).

Article 4

This Decision shall enter into force on the date of its adoption.
