“Creativity for Sustainability” Presidency Communication Campaign held this week

This week, Slovenia, which is currently holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, launched a communication campaign entitled “Creativity for Sustainability”, bringing the importance of culture and creativity to sustainable development closer to the general public.

The campaign is taking place just before the beginning of the World Conference on Creative Economy in Dubai, which is fitting way to bring the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development to a close. UNCTAD is the main partner of the campaign, which is also supported by a number of national and international partners.

In cooperation with renowned photographer Manca Juvan, Slovenia, which is currently holding the Presidency of the EU i Council, has produced a set of video stories about four creative individuals leaving an important mark in the world in education, economic development, urban areas and the wider environment. A sustainable lifestyle as a responsible way of living and preserving the planet for future generations is both an international political commitment and a personal choice.

Over the course of the week, four video stories will be released.

Creativity for quality education: The H2Student project, led by Matjaž Knez, is proof of quality education (SDG4) seeking answers to the question of how to inspire young people’s interest in sustainable mobility and new hydrogen technologies with creative approaches in the education system. Young people who are increasingly vulnerable to environmental issues are attracted to the project, which sparks interest in professions related to hydrogen technologies.

Creativity for economic growth: Entrepreneur, designer and Director of Donar, d.o.o. Matej Feguš tells an inspiring story about how employees working a shorter working week can be as productive as those with standard working hours, allowing the company to make sustainable progress. The company promoting environmental awareness and corporate responsibility has received numerous national and international recognitions.

Creativity for sustainable communities: Maša Cvetko, one of the architects of the Prostorož association, believes that public spaces are vital for maintaining a high quality of life in cities. She insists that engaging local residents in the revitalisation of abandoned parts of cities is the right path to creating democratic, flexible and sustainable solutions in human settlements (SDG11).

Creativity for the environment: The philosophy of zero waste in fashion (SDG13) and careful selection of materials are the rationale behind the work of the designer Tina Princ and her brand Things I Miss. She considers clothing not only as a piece of material, but also as a life philosophy with the concept of coexistence of the body, fabric, movement and space. By employing circular design, she prolongs the life span and usability of garments - our second skin.

Creative industries have also been at the forefront of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU. This topic has been at the centre of political debates, reflecting in concrete projects carried out together with a broad network of international partners (Future of Living Exhibition, Europe Readr Platform and AI debates).

The September Conference entitled Future Unlocked!, in partnership with the European Creative Industries Summit 2021, attracted policymakers as well as creative entrepreneurs from more than 40 countries.
