Charlemagne Youth Prize: 2021 and 2020 winners - Main contents
A Czech project on fake news has won the 2021 Charlemagne Youth Prize, while a German oral history project picked up the 2020 award.
The event was cancelled last year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, so the winners for both 2020 and 2021 were honoured in a ceremony in Aachen on 30 September.
2021 winners
First prize went to the Czech Fakescape project, which uses games to teach young people how to think critically and spot fake news.
Second was Generation Z from Romania, a project bringing young people together with people such as scholars, university professors and even an actor and an astronaut to encourage curiosity, critical thinking and free speech, as well as inter-generational dialogue.
Spain’s EuroInclusion picked up the third prize. It is an exchange programme for young Europeans, which aims to achieve full social, cultural and political integration of people living with disabilities in a free, diverse and united Europe.
2020 winners
The European Archive of Voices project from Germany collects oral recounts of history from people born before 1945.
Second place went to the French Moving towards a European Civic Service, an association helping young Europeans to volunteer at home and in other countries with the aim of addressing major societal challenges such as the environment.
Third was Madeleina Kay from the UK, who is known as #EUsupergirl, with the Future is Europe initiative.
European Charlemagne youth prize
The prize, jointly awarded by the European Parliament and the International Charlemagne Foundation, is open to initiatives by young people aged 16-30 involved in projects helping to promote understanding between people from different EU countries. Since 2008, more than 4250 projects have competed for the prize.
