After an intense week of negotiations, in which an attempt was made to reach an understanding between the parties, for the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), divergences arose on relevant points, which led the Council to request the Presidency to interrupt the negotiations.

“Already next week, the Portuguese Presidency is available to restart, with the same sense of commitment, the search for solutions to complete the reform of the CAP”, explained the Minister of Agriculture, Maria do Céu Antunes, who chairs the Council of Agriculture Ministers of the European Union.

The Minister stressed that "the Portuguese Presidency is committed to building an agreement for the reform of the CAP during the month of June", and stated that it is crucial that the new CAP "is modern and that allows European agriculture to transition to greater integration. environmental and climate objectives, reflecting a greater social concern, guaranteeing the competitiveness of farmers and leaving no one behind ”. In addition, she stressed: “We want the CAP reform to strengthen the European agrifood system, making it more sustainable and fairer for all”.

In a press conference, Maria do Céu Antunes recalled that the legislative proposals, presented by the European Commission, have been discussed for three years and that, and to not compromised the CAP Strategic Plans, it is crucial to reach an agreement during the next month.
