On 1 February 2021, Marek Opioła took office as the new ECA Member for Poland.

Mr Opioła was appointed for the period from 1 February 2021 to 6 May 2022. He will complete the term of former Member Janusz Wojciechowski i, who was appointed EU Commissioner for agriculture about a year ago. Mr Opioła was formerly Vice-President of the Supreme Audit Office of Poland. Prior to that, he was a member of the Sejm (the Polish parliament) from 2005 to 2019.

The ECA’s College of Members, under President Klaus-Heiner Lehne i, will meet shortly to determine Mr Opioła’s exact duties. He will then be sworn in before the European Court of Justice. An updated organisation chart, along with Mr Opioła’s CV and declaration of interests, will be published on the ECA website.

The Members, nominated by their respective governments, are appointed by the Council of the EU after consultation with the European Parliament. Their terms of office are renewable.

The ECA operates as a collegiate body of 27 Members, one from each Member State. They are required by the Treaty to perform their duties entirely independently and in the general interest of the EU.
