Two years ago, the murder of Slovak journalist Ján Kuciak led to the resignation of a Prime Minister and exposed how corruption can undermine the rule of law in the heart of Europe. The election of an anti-corruption activist as President in 2019 raised hopes that the country would seriously tackle the rule of law problems. However, the trial of Kuciak’s killers continues to dominate headlines. Against this background, Slovaks will head to the polls on 29 February to elect a new Parliament. While attacks on the judiciary in Poland and Hungary continue to dominate the media agenda, the need to address the threat corruption poses to the integrity of the rule of law is just as important in the case of Slovakia.
