On 11 February 2020, world’s Safer Internet Day, Europol will host the third ‘European Youth Day at Europol’, a large open day for Dutch and international students aged 12 to 15 years old. This event will provide a hands-on interactive learning experience regarding different topics around internet, technology and online safety.
Under the overall theme ‘Together for a better internet’, Europol will offer a unique platform for young people to make their voices heard on online and offline safety issues. They will have the possibility to enhance their cyber literacy through active collaboration with Europol experts and highly experienced cyber professionals from the public and private sectors. It is expected that the attendees will share the lessons learned with their peers and family members, acting as ‘cyber ambassadors’ and helping to increase the local level of awareness.
The outcome of the event shall also be used to identify key areas requiring awareness attention from law enforcement, including sexual extortion and coercion of children, cyber bullying, grooming, sexting, self-generated material, or further adjustment/development of EU policies and/or regulations.
The programme has been tailored in cooperation with the following partners: Dutch Safer Internet Centre, Dutch Helpline (Expertisebureau Online Kindermisbruik), Dutch High Tech Crime Unit, The Hague Police, Twente University, Hack in the Class, Cybersafety4u, Forum Europe, Palo Alto Networks and KPN.
Background
Two years ago, Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) launched the ‘European Youth Day at Europol’, an innovative project aimed at amplifying the voices of children in the area of online safety. Two key dates were highlighted: the adoption of the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the European Day of the Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse.
There have been two editions so far (November 2018 and October 2019), with the participation of around 100 young students from The Hague.
The European Police Office (Europol) is the EU’s law enforcement agency, whose remit is to help make Europe safer by assisting law enforcement authorities in EU member countries.
