Moving to a climate neutral economy, citizens’ rights after Brexit and the crisis in the Middle East are among the topics being dealt with during the first plenary session of 2020.
MEPs will outline their views on the European Green Deal, an ambitious plan to turn the EU into a climate neutral economy by 2050, in a resolution to be voted on Wednesday.
A day before that, they will discuss the European Commission proposals, aimed at attracting private and public investment for this green transition as well as financially supporting regions and industries affected by it.
On Tuesday afternoon, MEPs will focus on the most pressing foreign policy matters, including the situation in Iran and Iraq, as well as in Libya.
On Wednesday, Parliament will vote on a resolution calling for better protection of the rights of EU citizens living and working in the UK after the country leaves the EU.
On Thursday, MEPs will vote on Parliament’s position for the UN biodiversity conference in October in China. There countries are expected to reach a new global agreement on the protection and restoration of species and habitats.
MEPs will also debate the priorities of the new Croatian Council presidency and adopt Parliament’s position on the Conference on the Future of Europe, a new initiative looking at what legal changes are needed to better prepare the EU for the future.
