Double duty actions to address all forms of malnutrition: from evidence to programmes and policy
Background
A series of events is organized with the aim to bring attention to new knowledge on the double burden of malnutrition and the global risks of malnutrition in all its forms, which threaten the economic, social and environmental health of individuals, families, entire communities, countries and the planet. By contributing to the global dialogue on nutrition and efforts to address the double burden of malnutrition, this series of events intends to accelerate political commitment and advance the achievement of the SDGs, especially SDG 2 and SDG 3. During these events, new findings published in The Lancet Series on the Double Burden of Malnutrition will be presented.
After the London global launch on 16 December, the second of a series of events will take place in Geneva, on 18 December 2019. At the event, organized by the World Health Organization, Permanent Missions to the UN in Geneva and organizations in official relations with WHO will be briefed on the key findings of The Lancet Series on the Double Burden of Malnutrition.
The event will be webcast live and opened by the WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The Director of the WHO Department of Nutrition for Health and Development, Dr Francesco Branca, will present the key findings of the papers, followed by an intervention by WHO’s Chief Scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan on the impact of malnutrition on health and development in India. Participants in the room and viewers (via the chatbox) can ask questions and comment on the findings. Ms Gerda Verburg, Scaling Up Nutrition Global Coordinator will share her insights.
