An effective fisheries control system is essential to ensure that EU fisheries are managed in a sustainable manner, which in turn ensures the long-term viability of the EU fisheries sector.

The Commission has proposed a revision of the EU Fisheries Control System (2018/0193(COD)) by amending the existing framework. The proposal on the revision of the fisheries control regulation is a key file in the implementation process of the new Common Fisheries Policy. This hearing is important, at this stage of the process in order to receive inputs from experts in the field, in view of preparing the draft report. The hearing focused on the weaknesses of the current EU fisheries control system. The Members of the Fisheries Committee exchanged with experts on best practices and how they could be further developed and implemented in the EU.
