Newly-elected Parliament President David Sassoli went to the Maelbeek metro station in Brussels on 5 July to pay tribute to all victims of terrorism.

“On my first day as president of the European Parliament, I wanted to pay tribute to the victims of terrorism in the capital of Europe, and of course all victims of terrorism," Sassoli said. "This is a symbolic gesture on behalf of all members of Parliament. We have to be a land of peace. We have to stand firm in the fight against terrorism and violence."

The Maelbeek station was the scene of a suicide bomb attack on 22 March 2016, minutes after other suicide bombers had carried out attacks at the airport just outside Brussels. A total of 32 civilians died in the bombings on that day.
