Tampere to host 30th European Green Party Council!

We are thrilled to welcome you to our 30th European Green Party Council in Finland’s third biggest city Tampere between 8-10 November. It will be a unique opportunity to meet Green leaders from across Europe in one of Finland’s Greenest municipalities, share best practices and chart a way forward as we stand on the cusp of a new decade.

Our hosts the Finnish Greens (Vihreät - De Gröna) have scored a series of important victories in 2019 at European, national and local level. In Brussels, the Finnish Greens gained two Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and now hold the leadership of the EU’s rotating presidency that could positively impact Europe’s climate policy. In national elections earlier this year, they scored their best ever results and now join one of four Green parties in Europe that hold influential ministerial posts within governing coalitions. They are also part of one of Europe’s most female-powered governments with women holding 11 out of the 19 ministerial posts in the cabinet. But perhaps most importantly, Finland is now leading the world on tackling climate destruction and biodiversity loss after announcing a hugely ambitious 2035 climate neutrality target.

That’s why, together with our Finnish colleagues, we would like to gather in Tampere to reflect on these achievements and discuss how we can spread the Green Wave even further. We’ll be able to look back at the spectacular results at the European elections of our member parties in Germany, France, Belgium, the UK, Ireland and Denmark, to name only a few, and examine the common thread that unites us together in a bigger European Green family. On a practical level, we’ll look in detail at the European Green Party common campaign and see how we can continue to make improvements that benefit all members. It’ll also be a chance to adopt a new activity plan and renew our leadership at an executive level by calling on delegates to elect open positions within EGP, including a new Committee, Financial Advisory Board, Conciliation panel, Green European Foundation representative and Global Greens coordination representative.

This year has marked an incredible shift for Green party fortunes across Europe. We’ve experienced unprecedented growth and proved ourselves to be a very competent political force capable of seizing the moment and driving through political transformation. We urge delegates to join us in Tampere between 8-10 November for this important Council, which will help shape the direction of the Green family at this critical juncture in Europe’s political landscape.
