During their first plenary session since the European elections, MEPs will elect Parliament's president and vice-presidents, and decide on the composition of its committees.
Election of Parliament’s president
On Wednesday 3 July MEPs will elect their president for the next two-and-a-half years. The election is held by secret ballot and there could be up to four rounds of voting. Either a political group or a group of at least 38 MEPs can put candidates forward.
Selecting vice-presidents and quaestors
Once the newly elected president has taken the chair, MEPs will proceed with the election of 14 vice-presidents, who will help the president run proceedings. Five members will be elected as quaestors, who will deal with administrative matters affecting MEPs.
Parliamentary committees
On Wednesday, Parliament will also vote on the size of its standing committees and subcommittees. Political groups will then decide which of their members will sit in which committees. This will be announced in plenary later on the same day.
EU summits
On Thursday morning, MEPs will discuss June's EU summits with European Council President Donald Tusk and Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
EU heads of state and government met on 20-21 June to discuss the nomination of the new heads of the EU institutions, as well as the EU long-term budget for 2021-2027 and climate change. They meet again on Sunday 30 June to continue talks on the new heads of the EU institutions.
