The Committee of the Regions (CoR) is an EU advisory body composed of locally and regionally elected representatives coming from all 27 Member States. Through the CoR they are able to share their opinion on EU legislation that directly impacts regions and cities.
What does the CoR do?
The CoR gives regions and cities a formal say in EU law-making ensuring that the position and needs of regional and local authorities are respected.
- 1.The Paul-Henri Spaak building houses the hemicycle for plenary sessions of the European Parliament in Brussels.
- 2.Frans Timmermans is Minister of Foreign Affairs since November 5th 2012. Between 2007 and 2010 Timmermans was junior minister of Foreign Affairs, charged with European Cooperation. In 1998 Timmermans became member of the House of Representatives, serving terms until 2007 and again in between 2010 and 2012. Prior to his political career Frans Timmermans served with dr. M. van der Stoel, High Commissioner of national minorities at OSCE and was member of the cabinet of Commissioner Van den Broek at the EC. He also worked at various posts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- 3.Monika Wulf-Mathies (1942) is een Duitse sociaaldemocrate die in 1995-1999 in de commissie-Santer als eurocommissaris belast was met regionaal beleid. Na bij de persafdeling van het ministerie van Economische Zaken te hebben gewerkt, werd zij bestuurder van de vervoersvakbond. Zij was de eerste vrouw die een Duitse vakbond leidde. Als Europees Commissaris zette zij zich in voor het ontkoppelen van het regionaal en het landbouwbeleid. In 1998 beperkte zij de financiële steun aan Nederlandse regio's, ten voordele van (potentiële) nieuwe Oost- en Midden-Europese EU-landen.
- 4.Joan Calabuig Rull was a member of the European Parliament from 20 July 2004 to 31 March 2008 as an independent member, and was aligned with the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats. Calabuig Rull took seat in Parliament on behalf of Spain.
- 5.Eva Maydell is a member of the European Parliament since 1 July 2014 for "Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria", which is aligned with the European People's Party. Maydell is elected on behalf of Bulgaria.
- 6.Nicolas Schmit (1953) is the Commissioner on behalf of Luxemburg since December 1st 2019. In the Von der Leyen Commission he is responsible for employment policies. Previously Schmit served as a member of the European Parliament for the "Parti ouvrier socialiste luxembourgeois", which is aligned with the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.
