MEPs will assess the EU summit decisions on migration and asylum policy with Council President Tusk and EU Commission President Juncker on Tuesday at 16.00.

The 28-29 June the European Council reached agreement to set up “controlled centres”, within the EU where newly-arrived migrants and asylum-seekers can stay while their status is clarified. National leaders also agreed to “explore the concept of regional disembarkation platforms” outside the EU.

The leaders also agreed on the urgent need to reach a consensus on the reform of the Dublin Regulation. Parliament has been waiting since November 2017 for the EU member states to agree their position on this key file for the overhaul of the Common European Asylum System, so that inter-institutional negotiations can begin.

Other summit topics likely to be raised in the plenary debate are deepening the Economic and Monetary Union, trade conflicts with the US, the next EU budget, Brexit negotiations and EU security and defence cooperation.
