  • Marcel Brus, hoogleraar internationaal publiekrecht
  • Sadet Karabulut, Tweede Kamerlid SP
  • Joël Voordewind, Tweede Kamerlid ChristenUnie

Tentoonstelling

At the beginning of this year, the Turkish army conducted the first air raids at the North-Syrian, Kurdish city Afrin under the name: Operation Olive Branch. Even though these air raids cause dozens of civilian casualties up until today, this war is fought in great silence. This silence of the international community is heard around the attacks on Kurdish cities in Turkey, like Sur, as well. Experts in international law question the legality of the Turkish attacks in Syria and Turkey. Should the international community intervene? And what does the future of the Kurdish people in those areas look like? With representatives of the Turkish Peoples' Democratic Party, and representatives of the Dutch government (Sadet Karabulut, SP) and Joël Voordewind (ChristenUnie), we will discuss these questions. Also, we engage with Marcel Brus, Professor of Public International Law, and with photographer Piet den Blanken, who travelled to Sur and recorded the consequences of this hidden war.

The photo exhibition The destruction of Sur will be opened during the debate and can be visited at the bovenfoyer of De Balie from 19 June to 26 June 2018.

Speakers:

  • Sinan Önal, representative of HDP in Germany
  • Nursel Aydogan, former member of parliament for HDP in Diyarbakir
  • Marcel Brus, professor of Public International Law
  • Sadet Karabulut, member of parliament in the Netherlands for SP
  • Joël Voordewind, member of parliament in the Netherlands for ChristenUnie

Photo exhibition

The centuries-old centre of Diyarbakir, which was partly safeguarded by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage Site, has been destroyed. Sur is the heart of the Kurdish community in Turkey. Photographer Piet den Blanken travelled to Sur and portrayed the consequences of this hidden war. The photo exhibition The destruction of Sur will be opened during the debate and can be visited at the Bovenfoyer of De Balie from 19 June to 26 June 2018.
