Uitzenddatum: maart 2018 (EO/Ikondocs), 52 min.

ENGLISH

Documentary The Deal is a report on the current situation on Lesbos for refugees and refugee organisations as an immediate result of the EU - Turkey refugeedeal.

A film by Els van Driel & Eefje Blankevoort

The premiere will be followed with a debate with Gerald Knaus (European Stability Initiative and constructor of the EU-Turkey Deal), Kathelijne Buitenweg (GroenLinks), Kati Piri (PvdA), moderated by Harm Ede Botje (Vrij Nederland).

On the 19th of March 2016 the European Union made a deal with Turkey to limit the number of refugees arriving in Europe by providing regional shelter.

More than a year later The Deal provides us with an honest, raw and on topic report of the effect of this deal on refugee migration in Europe but also worldwide. This deal will serve as the blueprint for new agreements with several countries in North Africa, but is this the best we have to offer?

Residents Lesbos, volunteers and caregivers describe in their own words how relief camps are declining and slowly turn into prisons. The documentary also follows Qudmany, a Syrian refugee trying to reach his terminally ill father in Germany before he passes away.

Gerald Knaus, founding chairman of the European Stability Initiative has constructed this deal and also appears in the documentary. Neither rightwing organisations nor humanitarian organisations are pleased with the results and the filmmakers follow Knaus around Europe attempting to improve the asylum policy.

Today Gerald Knaus will attend the premiere of the documentary and join in the debate discussing the results of the current measures.
