Debate: How enforceable is the Dutch law?

What consequences have political decisions in practice? Are the Dutch laws implemented succesfully? On Wednesday 6 June 2018, a debate was held on the enforceability of Dutch legislation. Paul Frissen, José Lazeroms1, Ewout Irrgang2 and Jan Franssen3 joined the discussion. The debate was led by Eva Kuit.4

Democracy in Debate

This event is part of Democracy in Debate, a series of monthly events organized by Filmhuis Den Haag5, the Montesquieu Institute, Nieuwspoort6 and Prodemos7.

  • 1. 
    José Lazeroms (1964) is sinds 1 januari 2012 lid van de Raad van Bestuur van UWV. Lazeroms is onder meer gespecialiseerd in ICT-vraagstukken, en deelt haar kennis daar over ook buiten het UWV in overlegorganen en adviesgroepen. Voor haar aanstelling bij het UWV werkte Lazeroms als leidinggevende bij diverse ministeries.
     
  • 2. 
    Ewout Irrgang (1976) is sinds 1 september 2017 lid van de Algemene Rekenkamer. Hij was van 6 oktober 2005 tot 20 september 2012 Tweede Kamerlid van de SP. De heer Irrgang was eerder medewerker van De Nederlandsche Bank en tot 2005 financieel-economisch adviseur van de SP-Tweede Kamerfractie. Hij was financieel woordvoerder van de SP-fractie en hield zich daarnaast bezig met ontwikkelingssamenwerking en globalisering. Na zijn Kamerlidmaatschap werkte hij vier jaar in Tanzania.

    Vooraanstaande VVD-politicus en bestuurder die op jonge leeftijd medewerker werd van Hans Wiegel. Komt uit een Nederlands-hervormd fabrikantengezin. Was geschiedenisleraar, bestuurder van de JOVD en gemeenteraadslid in zijn woonplaats. In 1982 behoorde hij tot een lichting jonge, ambitieuze VVD-Kamerleden. Ontwikkelde zich snel tot een bekwame woordvoerder onderwijs en binnenlands bestuur en werd later fractiesecretaris. Na zijn vertrek uit de Kamer als burgemeester van Zwolle, voorzitter van de VNG en Commissaris van de Koning(in) in Zuid-Holland een bestuurlijk zwaargewicht. Was in 2014-2021 staatsraad.

    Eva Kuit (1967) is trainer en coach gespecialiseerd in de omgang met media en communicatie in het algemeen. Voor ze haar eigen bedrijf startte was zij jarenlang als journalist actief in en om het Binnenhof en later in het Rotterdamse. Kuit is als bestuurder betrokken bij diverse stichtingen en goede doelen.

    The Filmhuis Den Haag (movie theater The Hague) is an independent arthouse showing primarily films that are not shown in regular cinemas. The Filmhuis Den Haag also organises lectures, debate evenings, workshops and educational screenings.
     
  • 6. 
    International press centre Nieuwspoort (English: news gate) is a meeting point for politicians, journalists, lobbyists and press officers. Press conferences by politicians and ministers often take place at Nieuwspoort.
     
  • 7. 
    ProDemos is the 'House for Democracy and the Rule of Law'. ProDemos explains the Dutch govermental system and the rule of law to students, tourists, members of political organisations and other guests. The ProDemos Visitor Centre is located directly opposite the Houses of Parliament (Binnenhof) in The Hague. From here ProDemos provides guided tours, educational programmes, debates, exhibitions, and courses.
