Debate: The Netherlands and the EU: time to take a stance

What is the Netherlands' position in Europe? Political events like brexit have caused a reorientation on the EU. What are the priorities? Opposing views and interests of the Member States create several dilemmas for the Dutch government. How can the Netherlands benefit from the new balance of power? Is it time for the government to take a stance?

Bernard Steunenberg, Professor of Public Administration, Anne Mulder1, member of Parliament (VVD), and Bert van Slooten, news correspondent in Brussels (NOS) discussed these topics on the 7th of March 2018. The debate was led by Kees Boonman2.

    Haagse VVD-politicus die ruim tien jaar Tweede Kamerlid was. Werd daarna wethouder van 's-Gravenhage. Was eerder gemeenteraadslid (tevens fractievoorzitter) in Den Haag. Was onder meer ambtenaar bij Financiën en BZK en medewerker van de VVD-Tweede Kamerfractie en daarna adviseur public affairs bij een Haags adviesbureau. Verder diende hij als 'blauwhelm' bij de VN-vredesmacht in Bosnië. Als Kamerlid lid van de parlementaire enquêtecommissie woningcorporaties en voorts onder meer woordvoerder zorg en Europese zaken, rapporteur over de Brexit en voorzitter van de vaste commissies voor Financiën. Beschikte over droge humor en leidde met soepele hand commissievergaderingen.

    Kees Boonman is journalist en politiek commentator van de Haagse politiek. Elke zaterdagochtend is hij te horen bij Nieuwsweekend op NPORadio1. Hij is werkzaam voor diversie televisie- en radioprogramma's en is gespecialiseerd in Haagse en Europese politiek. Boonman was tot 2021 ook werkzaam als docent Journalistiek en Nieuwe Media aan de Universiteit Leiden. In publieke discussies is Boonman vaak pleitbezorger voor meer aandacht voor kwaliteit en goed onderzoek in de journalistiek.
