Women’s rights in Afghanistan - Joint Hearing, Brussels

The Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) and the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) will organise, jointly with the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with Afghanistan a hearing on the rights of women in Afghanistan.

The hearing will count with the participation of Ms Chekeba Hashemi, President, Afghanistan Libre; Ms Latifa Ahmadi, Executive Director, Organization for Promoting Afghan Women's Capabilities (via Skype, tbc); Mr Abdul Wadood Pedram, Executive Director, Human Rights and Eradication of Violence Organization (via Skype, tbc); Ms Horia Mosadeq, Afghanistan Researcher, Amnesty International; Ms Malalai Joya, activist, writer, and a former Member of the National Assembly of Afghanistan and Mr Mirco Günther, Country Director, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Afghanistan.

Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM)

The committee of Women's Rights and Gender Equality is responsible for:

  • The definition, promotion and protection of women's rights in the Union and related Community measures;
  • The promotion of women's rights in third countries;
  • Equal opportunities policy, including equality between men and women with regard to labour market opportunities and treatment at work;
  • The removal of all forms of discrimination based on sex;
  • The implementation and further development of gender mainstreaming in all policy sectors;
  • The follow-up and implementation of international agreements and conventions involving the rights of women;
  • Information policy on women.

Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI)

The Subcommittee on Human Rights is responsible for:

  • Evaluating the implementation of EU instruments in the field of human rights and democracy, the right to hold the Commission and the Council accountable for for their activities in this area.
  • Ensuring the continuous dialogue with international agencies working in the field of human rights in order to guarantee consistency between EU and international instruments in this field.
  • Providing a platform for the analysis of human rights claims related to specific topics and/or regions and using this platform for input on human rights and democracy in reports to the Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Affairs, agreements with third countries included.
  • Preparation of own-initiative reports on specific human rights instruments.
  • The 'mainstreaming' of human rights claims in the different organs (committees and delegations) of the European Parliament.
  • Organising and preparing the procedure for awarding the Sakharov Prize.
  • Equipping delegations of the Subcommittee.
  • Providing a platform for a permanent dialogue with representatives of civil society.
