Schulz to attend funeral ceremony of former Portuguese President Mário Soares - Main contents

The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz i will attend the state funerals of former Portuguese President Mário Soares i.

On learning of the death of former President Soares, Schulz stated:

“With the death of Mário Soares, Portugal and the European Union have lost a towering statesman: a visionary, a pragmatist, a reformist, a fighter and a democrat. Mário Soares brought Portugal back at the heart of the European family giving Portuguese citizens greater prosperity, social protections and liberties. Mário Soares is more than a historical figure. He is an inspiration. He advanced freedom, equality and dignity in Portugal and beyond. His legacy will last.

Tomorrow I will be in Lisbon for the official funeral ceremony and to pay tribute to this extraordinary political figure.”
