European Commission at UN General Assembly

A high-level delegation from the European Commission is participating in this year's United Nations General Assembly, which is taking place from 20 to 29 September in New York.

First Vice-President, Frans Timmermans i, and High Representative/Vice-President, Federica Mogherini i, will join European Council President, Donald Tusk i, at the UN's General Debate on 20 September.

On 19 September, all three took part in the UN Summit on Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants, alongside Commission Vice-President, Kristalina Georgieva i, Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn i, and Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos i.

"We need to build a system for human mobility," said HRVP Mogherini, addressing the roundtable on a global compact for safe, regular and orderly migration. She highlighted the EU i's ongoing efforts to address the migration and refugee challenge, starting with the new migration partnerships with third countries which the Commission launched in June this year. In a separate event hosted by the EU i, HRVP Mogherini and Vice-President Georgieva presented the new European External Investment Plan, which will invest in the most fragile states and provide new opportunities for young people.

The following Members of the Commission will participate in a number of high-level meetings throughout the week: Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica i; Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel, Arias Cañete i; Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis i; and Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides i.
