Mission: The Consumer Safety Network is a consultative expert group chaired by the European Commission. Its Members are composed of national experts from the administrations of the 28 Member States and EFTA/EEA countries competent in product safety; candidate countries and selected stakeholders are invited to attend as Observers. The expert group stimulates reflection and discusses topics related to consumer product and service safety and provides a knowledge base for policy work. It facilitates the exchange of expertise and best practices. In recent years, the main areas of discussion have been the safety of consumer products (including safety requirements for standardisation), co-ordinated market surveillance activities by Member State authorities, new and emerging issues, relevant data collection, international activities and cooperation, and communication activities. The group meets on average three times per year.

Selection procedure: There is no formal selection procedure. In accordance with Article 10 of the General Product Safety Directive, the Group is composed of a European network of the authorities of the Member States competent for product safety and consumer safety in general. An invitation and draft agenda are submitted to the relevant Member State authorities and Observers approximately 2-3 weeks prior to the date of the meeting. It is the competent authorities themselves who select their representative(s) according to the topics to be discussed.
Rules of procedure: The Consumer Safety Network operates in accordance with Article 10 of the General Product Safety Directive 2001/95/EC without any formal rules of procedure.
