Debate: The next European crisis?

On the 23rd of June the British people will vote on the EU-membership of the United Kingdom. For many years the United Kingdom and the Continental countries clash on their view on European integration. British companies warn about the consequences of a possible Brexit. Eurosceptics are convinced about the opportunities of a Brexit for the UK.

What are the possible consequences of a Brexit for the United Kingdom? And what consequences will it have on the European identity and the future of the EU? Is the referendum on Brexit the first sign of EU-fatigue in Europe? And should the Netherlands organize their own exit-referendum?

On Wednesday the 1st of June 2016, Jan Rood¹ (Institute Clingendael), Raoul Leering² (head International Trade research, ING) Peter de Waard³ (columnist at de Volkskrant) and Chris Aalberts⁴ (freelance journalist en political commentator) discussed these questions. Journalist and political commentator Max van Weezel moderated the debate.

• 1. 

  Jan Rood (1954) is voorzitter van het Nederlands Gezelschap voor Internationale Zaken. Hij was senior research fellow bij het Instituut Clingendael en hoogleraar Internationale Politieke Economie en Europese Integratie aan de Universiteit Leiden. Rood houdt zich met name bezig met de rol van de Europese Unie in de wereld en het Europees en Nederlandse buitenlands beleid.

  Raoul Leering is hoofd onderzoek handel bij ING. Leering studeerde economie en ging, na een korte tijd bij de FNV, de journalistiek in. Hij maakte na zeven jaar de overstap naar Economische Zaken alvorens bij ING aan de slag te gaan. Hij bleef ook na zijn tijd als journalist schrijven over economische kwesties en hij verschijnt ook met enige regelmaat in diverse media.

  Peter de Waard (1955) is journalist voor de Volkskrant waar hij vooral schrijft over economie. De Waard is ook bekend van zijn column 'De Kwestie' die vier maal per week in de Volkskrant verschijnt. Hij was eerder correspondent te Londen. De Waard schrijft ook boeken, onder meer over het Verenigd Koninkrijk en economische onderwerpen, en houdt een eigen website bij.

  Chris Aalberts is freelance onderzoeker en docent bij enkele hoger onderwijsinstellingen. Aalberts is gepromoveerd communicatiewetenschapper met als specialismen de rol van sociale media, jongeren en politiek, populisme en publieke interesse voor de Europese Unie. Naast zijn wetenschappelijke werk is Aalberts becommentarieert Aalberts in diverse media met regelmaat de laatste politieke ontwikkelingen.
