Debate: The Ukraine-referendum in perspective

GeenPeil logo

GeenPeil collected hunderds of thousands signatures to initiate a national referendum on the EU-Ukraine association agreement. According to proponents the treaty is nothing more than a trade agreement. Opponents claim this agreement will have serious political consequences.

What does this agreement imply? How do you inform voters about an international agreement of more than threehunderd pages? Is this agreement being used to start a discussion about the 'democratic deficit' of the European Union? What impact will the result of the referendum have on the position of the Dutch government?

On Wednesday the second of March Han ten Broeke i (VVD), Kees Verhoeven i (D66), Thierry Baudet i (initiator of the GeenPeil campaign for a referendum) and Wytze van der Woude i (professor in constitutional law at Utrecht University) discussed about these questions. Journalist and political commentator Max van Weezel moderated the debate.
