On 16 April, Commissioner Bieńkowska and Vice President Andrus Ansip received the CEOs of the postal operators from 21 Member States. At the meeting, they discussed progress on the so-called industry initiative - a package of measures proposed by national postal operators to improve interoperability and quality of cross-border parcel delivery (e.g. by improving customer service for cross-border products, allowing for more flexible delivery options and setting up track & trace system).

It was also an opportunity to remind the postal operators of the still existing issues of high prices of cross-border parcel delivery service. Affordable parcel delivery services are key, especially for SMEs who want to sell cross-border and for consumers who wish to benefit from a strong e-commerce activity in the Single Market.

Facilitating cross-border e-commerce will be one of the aims of the forthcoming Digital Single Market strategy and it is a priority for this Commission. Postal operators deliver a crucial service to millions of businesses and households each day and employ a large number of people. This is why the meeting comes at a very good time as it provides an opportunity to take stock of what has been already achieved and what still needs to be done.
