New EU Special Representative for Central Asia appointed - EU monitor

The Council has appointed Peter Burian as EU Special Representative for Central Asia.

The Special Representative is tasked with promoting EU political coordination in Central Asia, monitoring the implementation of the EU Central Asia Strategy and supporting regional security in the region.

Mr Burian, most recently Secretary of State at the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has an extensive career in the Slovak diplomatic service. His positions include those of ambassador to NATO and envoy to the United States of America.

Mr Burian will take up his duties immediately whereas his mandate as EU Special Representative initially lasts until 30 April 2016.
