Emily O’Reilly has been re-elected by MEPs as the European ombudsman for the EP's 2014-2019 term. During the secret ballot on Tuesday 16 December, she was backed by 569 MEPs. O’Reilly, who is from Ireland, was first elected European ombudsman on 3 July 2013, after her predecessor retired. She was the only candidate in today's ballot.

During the vote on 16 December 569 members voted in favour, 66 against and 43 abstained.

The task of the ombudsman is to investigate complaints about maladministration by EU institutions and bodies. Complaints can be submitted by anyone who lives in the EU or is an official citizen, as well as companies and associations with an office in the EU.
