António Cluny: new Portuguese National Member at Eurojust

​Eurojust is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr António Francisco de Araújo Lima Cluny as the National Member for Portugal at Eurojust. In accordance with Article 2(1) of the Eurojust Decision, Mr Cluny’s appointment is subject to approval by the Secretary General of the Council of the European Union. Mr Cluny officially took up his duties at Eurojust on 22 October.

Following his appointment, Mr Cluny said: ‘I am delighted to have been selected to represent Portugal at Eurojust. The Portuguese National Desk is one of the busiest at Eurojust and registers a significant number of cases; it plays an essential role in judicial cooperation. I have also been impressed by Eurojust’s efforts in combating serious organised crime and I very much look forward to contributing to Eurojust’s future success.’

Following graduation, Mr Cluny served as a Prosecutor in the Judicial Court of Cascais and in the Criminal Court of Lisbon until 1990. He was Chief Prosecutor in the Judicial Court of Sintra until 1992 and held the same role in the Judicial Court of Cascais until 1998. In 1998, he was appointed Deputy Prosecutor General on behalf of the Prosecutor General at the Supreme Courts: Court of Auditors.

Mr Cluny has held a number of other roles, including Expert of the Greco Committee on the European Council; former President of the Portuguese Association of Prosecutors; President of MEDEL - the European Association of Judges and Prosecutors - Magistrats Européens pour la Démocratie et les Libertés; and is a member of the International Consultative Council of the Argentine School for the Service of Justice - Escuela del Servicio de Justicia, and of the Court of Auditors Magazine - Revista do Tribunal de Contas; a former Member of the Bureau of CIVITAS (Portuguese Section of the FIDH); a former Director of the Portuguese Prosecutor’s Professional Magazine - Revista do Ministério Público; and a former Member of the Directive Board of the Human Rights Magazine, O Cidadão.

In addition, he has authored two books, Pensar o Ministério Público Hoje and Responsabilidade Financeira e Tribunal de Contas and many articles published in Portuguese, Brazilian, French, Belgian, German and Spanish Law and Judiciary Sociology journals.

In 2013, the Portuguese National Desk at Eurojust registered 80 bilateral and 9 multilateral cases, and attended 2 bilateral and 9 multilateral coordination meetings.
