Commenting on today’s awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize 2014, President Schulz said

"The European Parliament warmly congratulates the laureates of the Nobel Peace Prize 2014, Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi, activists for children's rights.

In the name of the Parliament, I am particularly proud that the 2013 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought laureate, Malala Yousafzai, gets her fight for girls' fair access to education acknowledged at the level of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Our Parliament was deeply touched by her speech last November in Strasbourg. She called for more care towards children who are out of education: "These children do not want an Iphone, an X-box, a Playstation or chocolates. They just want a book and a pen."

The European Parliament will always be at her side to champion her fight.

I also welcome that the Prize was awarded to two children's rights activists in India and Pakistan: education for all children is key to a sustainable peace."
