The Hague, 10 September 2014

Today, subject to approval by the European Parliament, Ms Věra Jourová i was nominated as the new Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality. Ms Jourová will be replacing Ms Viviane Reding i, the outgoing Vice-President and Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, who has rejoined the European Parliament as an MEP.

Eurojust warmly welcomes Commissioner-elect Jourová, and wishes her good luck and success. She has served as Czech Minister for Regional Development since January 2014. Prior to that appointment, Ms Jourová worked as Deputy Minister for Regional Development, as well as working as a law clerk and consultant, offering advice on funding, planning and development in the Czech Republic, Russia, the Balkans and the Baltic regions. She is also Vice-Chair of ANO, a political party. Ms Jourová has been a Member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Lower House of the Parliament of the Czech Republic since 2013.

Commissioner-elect Jourová will be working under First Vice-President-elect Frans Timmermans i, who will assist the Commission President-elect Jean-Claude Juncker i as Commissioner dedicated to a Better Regulation agenda, and as watchdog, upholding the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the Rule of Law in all Commission activities.

Upon learning of the appointment, Michèle Coninsx, President of Eurojust, commented: ‘We are very pleased with the nomination of the new Commissioner. We wish her all the best for the hearing of the European Parliament and for approval of the College of the Commission, and are ready to support the Commissioner in her preparation for these processes. We hope for a very productive relationship.’

In the newly elected Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker’s political guidelines, issued 15 July 2014, he specifically underlined, as one of his key priorities, to establish ‘an area of justice and fundamental rights based on mutual trust’, requiring ‘joint European action, based on shared values’. President-elect Juncker highlighted several proposals in the field of Justice and Home Affairs, including the ‘common European responsibility’ for combating cross-border crime, especially terrorism, human trafficking, smuggling, cybercrime and corruption. He specifically called for a step-by-step improvement in judicial cooperation among the Member States, ‘by building bridges between the different justice systems, by strengthening common tools such as Eurojust…’.
