In the European Union all 28 member states have their say in discussing issues and unanimously making decisions on foreign and defence policy. It often takes a lot of time and negotiations to reach consensus.

Is Europe losing its strategic position in the world because of this kind of decision-making process? How effective is this policy? And aren’t the Big Three actually running the show? Isn’t it so that Germany, the United Kingdom and France set the agenda and define Europe’s position?

The lecture will be followed by a panel debate. This debate is organized by the European Studies Association Concordantia. The audience can join the discussion.

The panel consists of:

Dr. Sabina Lange, EIPA (European Institute of Public Administration) - Lecturer, Decision-making in external relations of the EU; Presidency organisation and conduct.

Dr Petar Petrov, FASoS (Department of Political Science, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Maastricht University) - Assistant professor in international relations and EU foreign and security policy.

Uri Rosenthal

Moderator: Prof. dr. Rein De Wilde, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS), Maastricht University
