Relationship between europarties and Dutch political parties

In 2012 the Documentation centre for Dutch Political Parties¹ initiated a 4 year research project concerning the relationship between the Europarties and the Dutch political parties in the period 1974-2014.

The research will result in an English monography analyzing the historical development of the Europarties in the middle of the 1970's until the European Elections of 2014, in coherence with the disposition of the Dutch member parties with regard to this evolution.

The research will focus on how,and under what kind of circumstances, the Europarties have developed from loose federations to a much more organizational and political more relevant collaboration that exists nowadays. In addition, the research will look into the direct or indirect contribution of the Dutch collaborations and the extent in which they either stimulated or halted this process.

The research was conducted by prof.dr. Gerrit Voerman² and drs. Simon Otjes³.

  The DNPP forms part of the University of Groningen. Its remit is to provide systematic and generally accessible documentation on Dutch political parties, with special reference to the extraparliamentary activities of the parties.

  Was vanaf 1 januari 2011 tot 1 november 2024 hoogleraar ontwikkeling en functioneren van het Nederlands en Europees partijstelsel en sinds 1989 tot 1 december 2024 hoofd van het Documentatiecentrum Nederlandse Politieke Partijen (DNPP) van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Hij studeerde geschiedenis in Groningen en promoveerde in 2001 op een proefschrift over de relaties tussen de CPN en de Communistische Internationale. Kenner van de partijpolitieke geschiedenis van Nederland, in het bijzonder van de partijen ter linkerzijde. Treedt geregeld op als commentator in radio- en tv-programma's.

  Simon Otjes (1984) is sinds 2012 verbonden aan het DNPP als wetenschappelijk medewerker. Hij studeerde politieke wetenschap en filosofie van de sociale wetenschap aan de Universiteit Leiden en promoveerde in 2012 aan diezelfde universiteit op een proefschrift over nieuwe politieke partijen. Hij richt zijn onderzoek nu op Europese partijvorming. Simon Otjes werkte verder bij Bureau 'De Helling', het wetenschappelijk bureau van GroenLinks. Sinds 2021 is hij fellow bij het Montesquieu Instituut.
