Conference - Jurmala (Latvia) and Kaunas (Lithuania)

Baltic States' farmers are currently receiving the lowest direct payments under the CAP: up to six times lower than those in other Member States. At the same time, they are exposed to the pressures of the single market, with significant consequences for agriculture and rural areas over the past few years.

Latvian and Lithuanian agricultural organisations have initiated cooperation towards a cross-border conference to discuss these impacts on their countries' agricultural sectors and economies, on food prices, food safety and quality, as well as the social implications for rural areas. The conference will involve a range of stakeholders from the Baltic countries as well as from the European institutions. The conference topic is highly relevant to the on-going debate on the CAP reform.

The cross-border conference will be held in Jurmala (Latvia) on 3 May 2012 and in Kaunas (Lithuania) on 4 May 2012. Farm visits in the Kaunas region are scheduled for the 5 May.
