European Commission President José Manuel Barroso will travel with the college of Commissioners to Budapest in Hungary to meet with the representatives of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU, which will take over the rotating presidency from Belgium on the 1 January 2011.

The joint session in the Hungarian Parliament building will focus on the most important topics to be handled by the Hungarian Presidency. After the meeting a family photo will be made at the top of the Parliament’s main staircase. Prime Minister Viktor Orban and European Commission President José Manuel Barroso will hold a discussion in private, while the Hungarian ministers and ministers of state will hold talks with their commissioner counterparts according to Council formations.

From 12:50 to 13:25 there will be an international news conference by Prime Minister Viktor Orban and EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso (to be shown LIVE on EbS). The entry of Hungarian and foreign journalists to Parliament will be managed by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Hungary is the third of the fixed 'trio' of EU Presidencies which began following the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty. Spain, Belgium and Hungary, in order to provide a certain continuity to the work of the EU, set up a common work programme in accordance with the legislative provisions of the EU Treaties. This programme therefore covers a period of eighteen months, between January 2010 and June 2011.

These are the main objectives set up as part of this common work programme:

  • review the Lisbon Strategy so that the EU is better prepared to overcome the economic crisis, restore sustainable growth, a higher rate of employment and better competitiveness
  • better monitoring of the financial markets
  • broaden the social agenda and focus it on young people, on combating gender discrimination and fighting poverty
  • press forward on energy and climate change
  • make the EU a space for ever greater freedom, safety and justice (Stockholm programme)
  • set up a global European policy for immigration and asylum
  • set up a more consistent, effective external EU representation
  • place the emphasis on the defence of human rights and fundamental freedoms
