European Council President Mirek Topolánek i and delegates of the European Commission met with Moldova’s opposition leaders and NGO representatives at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Kishinev.

The leaders of the Liberal Party, the Liberal Democratic Party and Alliance Our Moldova presented their complaints and documents which allegedly show that the parliamentary elections held on 5 April were undemocratic and which underpin their complaint to the Moldovan Constitutional Court.

“The European Union is monitoring the situation in Moldova. I will pass these documents on to the Foreign Ministers of the EU Member States who will meet as soon as next week to discuss the situation in your country”, said the Czech Prime Minister while speaking to the opposition leaders, adding that “the Czech Presidency is ready to encourage a pro-democratic development in Moldova also within the Eastern Partnership project.”

Immediately after meeting with the opposition, Mirek Topolánek met with Moldovan Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanii. Before ending his visit, he will speak with President Vladimir Voronin and present him with an invitation for Moldova to the Eastern Partnership Summit.

“Like Belarus, the invitation for Moldova is not addressed to a particular political leader and it is up to their respective governments to choose their representative”, said the President of the European Council. The summit meeting of the European Union and the Eastern Partnership countries will take place on 7 May in Prague.
