The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) is tasked with ensuring all EU institutions uphold all rules and regulations with regard to the protection of personal information of individuals when such data is processed by the EU institutions. The EDPS advises and works closely with the data protection officers in the EU institutions to make sure personal data is handled with the appropriate care.
The EDPS also provides advice on new policy proposals that have bearing on issues regarding privacy and the handling of personal information. As such, the EDPS makes an effort to gather and share expertise on privacy and privacy-related issues, especially focusing on how new technologies might impact these. The EDPS maintains close relationships with the EU member states' data protection agencies.
