Directorate-General Economic and Financial Affairs (ECFIN)

The main task of this Directorate-General is to ensure the functioning of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). This can be achieved by monitoring economic development, co-ordinating economic policy, analysing economic policies and providing advice on economic policies.

The DG has the following tasks:

  • - 
    distributing guidelines for economic policy
  • - 
    assessment of stability and convergence programmes of member states (in which they provide, amongst other data, the development of their national deficits)
  • - 
    publishing of other reports, such as reports about public finances in the EMU, the EU Economic Overview and short- and long term economic analyses of the European Commission
  • - 
    provide economic analysis and an evaluation of policy areas of the European Union such as the internal market, agriculture and environment.
